Prudential Financial Consultant
Desmond has gone through the longest path of Education in Singapore. His ‘Never Give Up’ attitude is what pushed him to graduate from Nanyang Technological University (“NTU”) with a Bachelor’s Degree 2nd Class Lower Hons in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering).
Having spent ten years in the Republic of Singapore NAVY, Desmond had worked his way up from a specialist to an Engineering Officer. He was determined to prove to many that when there is a will, there is a way. It was not an easy task. When his contract ended in 2021, he decided to step out of his comfort zone and be self-employed.
What motivates me to be an FC then and also today?
My growth as an FC makes me motivated every day. I learn from different people from all walks of life and understand their personal stories.
Desmond joined Prudential in Feb 2022. It was a challenging decision for him with the birth of his son in Dec 2021. His situation did not stop him from pursuing his passion for planning for the people around him.
With his helpful personality, Desmond hopes that the people around him are well protected in terms of coverage and building their goals and dreams for the future. He believes that everyone should have the option to choose the life they live and not let life dictate how they live.
Desmond seeks to continue to improve himself to share his knowledge with the people and build his community.
What are some of the challenges you faced? How did you overcome it?
As a new Financial Consultant, I faced many challenges, from calling my friends for meet-ups to simply posting on social media. What stops me from doing it is a closed mindset. At the start, I feared my friends would isolate me when they knew I was an Financial Consultant. People will think that you are trying to sell them something. How I overcame it is – “just do it”. At the start, I felt scared, but the result turned out to be better than I expected. My friends are willing to listen to my sharing, and I will use my heart to plan for them. Their testimonials help me move forward stronger and motivate me to help everyone I approach. I am grateful for those who believe in me and allow me to serve them for life.
What do you think is the secret to success in this career?
There is no secret to success in this career. Focus on your daily activities and go out to meet more people. As an FC, we are people-facing jobs, so meeting different people will help in this business. There is a saying, “show me your calendar, and I will tell you your success in this business.”
